Sunset Beach Club Hotel Haad Rin: a relaxing stay steps from the party

I’m a Seattle based traveler that has been to over 40 countries and all 7 continents. I am a frequent solo traveler, visiting over 20 countries solo.

I consider myself a mid-budget travel generalist, meaning I like to do a little bit of everything from adventure activities and museums, to beach days and historic walking tours. Every now and then I’ll splurge on premium cabins or high end hotels, but most of the time I’m economy (probably Comfort+) and finding deals for well rated hotels.

Koh Phangan is known as a party island, but your accommodations don’t have to be.  The Sunset Beach Club Hotel Haad Rin offers a peaceful stay within walking distance from the action.

About the Sunset Beach Club Hotel Haad Rin

This hotel has just about everything you could need: private beach access, a pool, spacious rooms, free breakfast and best of all… it’s adults only.

Sunset Beach Club Amenities

This hotel has a surprising amount of amenities for the price.

Dining & Drinks

The Sunset Beach Club Hotel in Koh Phangan has free breakfast at their restaurant included in the price of the rooms.  This is a great benefit if you’re up early enough, or awake late enough.

There’s a good chance that like us, you are traveling here to experience the Full Moon Party scene.  If that’s the case you probably will not be awake for breakfast.  We missed it on our two nights in town because we usually didn’t get in until after 4am.  I think breakfast ends around 10am (or earlier).

The hotel also has a beach front bar next to the pool.  We did not get anything at the bar, so I’m not sure of their prices, but again it’s nice to have available.

Just outside the hotel on the beach is Sun Chasers’ Cafe.   This is a small local western style coffee shop and cafe.  The prices are decent, but when it’s busy the wait can be quite long.

Wellness

The hotel has a well sized pool that looks out over Sunset Beach.  There are lounge chairs surrounding the pool, and a covered area on one side of the pool if you’ve hit your limit of sun for the day.

The hotel has pool towels for guests to use at the pool or the beach.  And the craziest part, it was nearly empty while we stayed at the hotel.

There are additional lounge chairs and umbrellas on the beach to enjoy the sun or the incredible sunsets.

Other things to know about the Sunset Beach Hotel in Haad rin

As is in the name, the Sunset Beach Club Hotel is located on Sunset Beach in Haad Rin.  This is the western side of Haad Rin with perfect golden sunset views.  Since the south end of the property extends out into the water, making it inaccessible to walk through, basically making it a private beach for hotel guests.

One thing to note is the hotel does not have elevators.  The buildings generally only have two floors, so there are minimal steps, however if you have mobility issues be sure to review their accessible room options.

The rooms

The Sunset Beach Club Hotel Koh Phangan offers a few three room types.  There’s the Grand Deluxe Garden room, which is basically a king room with either a garden or ocean view. They also have a Junior Suite at around 550 sf with an ocean view or the Royal Suite at just under 1000 sf.

Since this hotel is adults only, it is geared more towards couples, so they only offer king beds. No doubles or split twin beds are available.

Comfort

I booked a fairly basic room, so there weren’t a lot of bells and whistles, but it had everything we needed.  There was a big enough bed to share, a small couch, air conditioning, mini fridge, a large wardrobe, and the best feature was the balcony where we could dry our swimsuits and wet clothes.

The bed was easy to pass out in after a long night of walking and dancing.

Price

We stayed in the Grand Deluxe Garden room with the garden view.  I booked the room less than a month in advance for an early December stay on Agoda for $72.50/night which included breakfast for 2.  Prices will be higher if you stay during Full Moon Party (we couldn’t stay that long), but on the flip side, you can get rooms for rates as low as $60 a night in quieter weeks.

Hotel room with a large white-bed, gray padded headboard wall, and white tiled floor; a blue sofa sits against the wall under a circular dark art piece; ceiling lights and an AC unit are visible.
Modern bathroom with a glass-walled shower, mosaic tile wall, and white vanity with a rectangular sink and chrome faucet.

Service at Sunset Beach Club Hotel Haad Rin

Like just about everywhere in Thailand, the staff at the hotel is incredibly friendly.  Our interactions were mostly limited to check in and check out.  At check in, they will walk you up to your room since it is a well sized hotel complex.

They are a great resource to use for getting taxis or looking for places to eat nearby.

The location

The Sunset Beach Hotel is located in Haad Rin, on the southern peninsula of Ko Pha Ngan.  The hotel is on the northwest side of Haad Rin, about a 10 minute walk to Haad Rin beach on the east side of the peninsula or the walking street in the center of town.

The hotel is in a much quieter area of town, which is great to recharge and relax.  But there are still shops like 7-11 nearby and lots of great low price local restaurants, like Baan Nong Praew,  just around the corner.

If you are looking for parties, just up the beach is the Seaside Beach Party.  During full moon week, there are parties every single day before and after the full moon.  The Seaside Sunset Bar has a beach party a few days leading up to the full moon.

Transportation to Sunset Beach Club Haad Rin

Transportation on the island in itself is a bit tricky.  The taxi vans and tuk tuk trucks are the way around from the ferry docks and Full Moon parties.

I strongly recommend having the driver drop you off at the Vannee Golden Sands hotel next door.  This is because there are a few different Sunset Beach hotels in Haad Rin, and there’s a good chance they will drop you at the wrong one.

I more or less got in a fight with our tuk tuk driver coming back from a party at 4am because he tried to drop us at a different hotel.  We got a little closer but with the language barrier that’s as good as it got. We still had to walk a path in the dark to get to the hotel faster, and thankfully we’d already tested that route earlier in the day to find a short cut.

When leaving the hotel, have the receptionist organize a taxi for you to get the best rates and fastest service.

Overall review of Sunset Beach Hotel

We had a short two night stay at the Sunset Beach Club Hotel Haad Rin, and I would have loved at least one more night.  I think the location is truly the selling point offering a beachfront resort that is still far enough away from the bars to have a restful stay.

If you are not into partying this is a really great place to stay at any time, and is a great value for what you get.  I would definitely return to this Koh Phangan Haad Rin hotel again.

Where to book the Sunset Beach Club Hotel

You can of course book directly through the Sunset Beach Club Hotel website, but I always get better prices through the sites below.
