Thai Weed: What You Need to Know

It may come as a surprise but Thai weed and mushrooms are now legal. This is a major change from a country that was once one of the strictest when it came to recreational drugs.

If there is one thing that millennials learned from Brokedown Palace it is you do not mess with drugs in Thailand. In the past, having Thai weed or other drugs was a major offense that was punishable with prison time and/or deportation. But in the last few years there has been a major shift within the Thai government when it comes to their drug policy.

When did Thai weed become legal?

The change of legalization for cannabis in Thailand is recent, as of 2022. This is a result of a change in government meant to boost the economy and help with prison overcrowding.

Since this change, the Thai weed industry has boomed especially with regards to the tourist industry.

What are the rules for purchasing and smoking Thai weed?

As of 2024, any one of legal age (20 or older) can purchase and enjoy weed in Thailand. You do not need a medical prescription to buy Thailand marijuana.

Smoking weed in public is not legal in Thailand. Smoke shops all have indoor seating lounges to sit and enjoy. You can also smoke on a designated outdoor patio. This is the same for restaurants (if they are OK with it).

In busier tourist areas like Patong Beach, be careful not to smoke your Thai weed on the beach or other public areas as the police may try to shake you down for money. This wasn’t an issue in Krabi, but be aware and respectful of your surroundings.

What forms of cannabis are available in Thailand?

In Thailand you can get weed in many forms, from flower to pre-rolls, concentrate to edibles, and tinctures to sodas. There are plenty of options whether you prefer to smoke, eat or drink.

Where can you purchase Thai weed?

In larger cities, and those with lots of tourists there are weed shops on nearly every corner. Weed stores in Patong are like coffee shops in Seattle. In some areas you can count 5 or more just in a single block. Edibles such as cookies and brownies can also be purchased at many bars in the area.

Phuket

Patong

If you are visiting Phuket, stop by Thai High Corp (THC) in Patong. This is one of the highest rated weed shops in Phuket. It has a really fun back room with a rainbow cloud ceiling, perfect for taking time to unwind from the chaos of Patong.

Kata

In Kata, I advise against shopping at Trippy Tribe. While the shop is beautiful and the staff is friendly the prices are astronomically overpriced. I tried to tell my friend while we were there, but it was her money so I couldn’t stop her. She got a 1g pre roll for 790 baht or around $25. Three days later she purchased joints in Koh Phangan (that she enjoyed much more) for 100-150 baht ($3-5).

Instead, check out Ska Bar, located along the rocks along the south end of Kata Beach. You can buy a pre roll of 200 baht, or have a drink and enjoy the view of the water. On weekends they also have fire dancers right on the beach.

Krabi

While in Krabi, stop by Jojo Reggae Bar in Ao Nang. This is at the north edge of town on the way to the large night market. Here they really lean into the reggae theme with the decor. You can also enjoy a cheap beverage for 99 baht ($3) in one of the many sidewalk chairs and enjoy the music.

Koh Phangan

Haad Rin is considered a big party town due to the Full Moon Party. You’ll find plenty of shops for cannabis and mushrooms, but the town is actually very laid back in nature.

There are two shops I’d recommend, The Hotbox Phangan and Thai Style Bar. The Hotbox is a traditional cannabis shop. Friendly staff AND they take credit cards (bonus!).

Thai Style Bar is a great little bar located along the walking street. You’ll find it next to the Boy Scouts Homestay (do not trust the Google Maps location). This is a small bar and cannabis shop. The owner Nuum grows and sells his own weed. He doesn’t have pre rolls, but will roll you as many joints as you want for 100 baht each.

How much does Thai weed cost?

Pre-rolls typically run anywhere from 150-400 baht ($4-12 USD)
Cannabis drinks are usually 150 bhat ($4 USD)
Edibles range from 150-250 baht ($4-7 USD)

What about mushrooms?

When visiting Thailand, you will also see signs for mushroom shakes. These are not your grocery store mushrooms, these are psilocybin mushrooms. You’ll find these shakes at cannabis shops as well as certain bars.

Mushroom shakes are anywhere from 500 to 800 baht ($15-23 USD).

Thailand has varying quality and strength of weed. Some strains are very strong and others are more mild. It will really depend on what price you’re willing to pay for the strength and quality of the weed.
